Butterflies

Caterpillars are transforming into painted lady butterflies in a special library display this month. The caterpillars have already reached the pupal stage, becoming beautiful iridescent chrysalids, and we are eagerly waiting for them to emerge as butterflies. Don’t miss seeing nature in action!

Vietnam veteran and local author Tom Jones will speak at the Forsyth Public Library on Saturday, May 11 at 10:00 a.m. His presentation “The Vietnam War and Today’s Military” discusses the influence of the war and highlights the similarities and differences between the military of the Vietnam era and today.

If you didn’t get to participate when our book discussion groups focused on The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, it isn’t too late to read this thought-provoking book about the Vietnam War. The Vietnam Remembrance Committee is sponsoring a One Book One Community focus on this title and Forsyth Public Library has several copies of the book available to read and pass on. Stop by the library to pick up your copy to read and share.

Vietnam War Memorabilia

Vietnam War era items are currently on display in the library, along with lists of recommended books on the topic. Our thanks to TJ Jackson, James Webb, and the families of Norman Lehman and Lyle Ed Matthews for loaning items for the display.

Macon County libraries are working cooperatively to honor those who served in the Vietnam War and are planning a variety of events and displays. Author and veteran Tom Jones will present “The Vietnam War and Today’s Military” at Forsyth Public Library on Saturday, May 11. The series of events will culminate with Decatur Public Library’s hosting of a traveling Vietnam War Memorial exhibit on May 16-19.

Book Groups

Food for Thought Book Group meets this Thursday, April 18 at 6:00 p.m. Our book this month is Erik Larson’s Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America and we are sharing a salad potluck. Please bring any type of salad to share. No advance registration is necessary, so feel free to join in for an interesting discussion of the incredible events surrounding the 1893 Chicago World's Fair.

Bookkeepers Book Discussion Group meets Friday, April 19 at 10:00 a.m. The book for April is Still Life by Louise Penny. New participants are always welcome.

Go Buggy at the Library

U of I Physics Van

U of I Physics Van is here today at 1:00 p.m., demonstrating physics in action while showing that science is fun. If you love our “Mad Science” shows during the summer, you don’t want to miss this event. This program is appropriate for ages 6 and up.

Changes are Coming

Forsyth Public Library will soon have a new circulation system.   We will be part of SHARE, thought to be the largest library automation consortium in the country.   This consortium will have 427 member libraries and more than 9.5 million items available for request. As we prepare for SHARE to go live on April 9, there are a few things you need to know.
•   March 15 is the last day to place holds on materials in the old system. New requests will not be accepted till April 9.
•   Any requests that have not been filled by Friday, March 22 will disappear from your record, as will any personal lists. Print out a copy before this date so you can request them again after April 9. We will be happy to help you with this.
•   Library cards are required for checkout from April 1-9. Make sure yours is ready! We will not be able to renew cards or issue new ones during this time. We will be using a very limited version of our new system and will not be able to look up patron information.
Please contact the library with any questions or to request help printing your requests.

Spring Storytimes

The first session of spring storytimes is Thursday, March 7 at 10:00 a.m. If you have preschoolers ages 3-5, we hope you will join us for stories, activities and a craft. No registration is necessary. Storytimes will be offered every Thursday in March and April.

Annual Materials Sale

The Magazine and Used Materials Sale will be Friday, March 8 from 10:00-4:00 and Saturday, March 9 from 10:00-1:00 in the library’s conference room. Items to be sold include magazines, DVDs, videos, and books that have been withdrawn from the library's collection to make room for newer titles.

Food for Thought

It’s not too late to be part of the new Food for Thought book group. Ice and snow pushed their first meeting back to Thursday, February 28 at 6:00 p.m. They will be discussing Killing Lincoln by Bill O’Reilly and dining on pulled pork donated by Texas Roadhouse.
