
Special Programs for Children and Adults
Summer readers may register to participate in these special events,
which are held in addition to the Tuesday afternoon programs. Age
appropriateness applies as indicated. Registration may
be required; read the program descriptions for details. Most
programs will take place in the Community Room of the library. Please
call the library (877-8174) if your child is unable to attend
a program for which he/she has registered. Doing so will help
to assure accurate numbers of needed supplies and helpers.
Saturday June 19
Family Fest Parade
9:00-10:30 a.m. All ages.
Summer readers are invited to join members of the library staff,
Winnie the Pooh and Tigger, as we cruise through Forsyth on the library’s
float during the annual Family Fest parade. Children must be pre-registered
with a parental permission form on file. The first 20 children to
sign up will receive cool T-shirts to wear that morning. Registration
required.
Monday June 28
“Spirits of the Sangamon”
6:30 – 7:30 p.m. Ages 10 - adult
“I ain’t afraid of no ghosts!” Or should I be? This
special evening program features John Winterbauer, Springfield representative
for the American Ghost Society (AGS) and co-founder of the Sangamon Valley
Ghost Research Group. Associated with Troy Taylor’s Haunted
Decatur Tour, John will present a collection of ghost stories
and paranormal encounters from the Decatur and Springfield areas,
some of which involve our 16th president, and even…..cannibals in Decatur? No child
under the age of 10 may attend without an accompanying adult. No registration
is required.
Thursday July 1
Who’s a Wimpy Kid?
1:00–2:30 p.m. Ages 7-12
It’s official: wimpy kids are taking over the world, and YOU
can get in on the action. If you’ve got the right wimp-itude
and are ready to bring it on, Greg Heffley-style, the library’s
the place to be for activities and games all inspired by Greg, Rodrick,
Manny and the rest of the crew. Ridiculously repulsive refreshments
served! Registration required.
Thursday July 8
Junie B. Jones’ Scary Library
Adventure
1:00–2:00 p.m. Ages 6 and up.
Last fall she thrilled us as Laura Ingalls Wilder, now Robin Shuda
brings to life another of our favorite storybook heroines, the intrepid Junie
B. Jones. This summer finds Junie in a world of trouble….at
the library no less! Join us as Junie tells us all about it
as only she can. There’ll be just enough time for yummy
treats and a possible photo op with Junie B. herself! Registration
required.
Monday July 12
Twilight Fest
6:30–7:30 p.m. Ages 11 +
It’s a night with bite for fans of Bella, Edward and Jacob
as we enjoy games and activities inspired by the Twilight saga. Pose
for a portrait with the fearsome threesome, then sink
your teeth into some tasty refreshments. Optional: Come
dressed as your favorite Twin Forks character or any vampire or werewolf
of your own creation. Registration required.
Thursday July 15
The Artist’s Studio
1:00–3:00 p.m. Ages 7 +
Calling all budding artists… Jenny Cowgill of Maroa
presents two colorful projects using crayon wax resist and watercolor. The
first is an abstract design using line, color, pattern and repetition
to create balance and unity. In a second project, students apply
the same concepts to create a picture of a monster or mythological
creature. Students will have the option of taking their projects
home that day or leaving them to be displayed in the library until
the end of Summer Reading. Registration required.
Thursday July 22
Monster Matinee
1:00–3:00 p.m. Ages 5 +
We’re having some scary, but kid-friendly
movie entertainment for our summer readers (title to be announced). After
a warm-up cartoon, we’ll enjoy our feature presentation, complete
with movie-time snacks. Children may bring a blanket or pillow
for more comfort. Parents are also welcome to join us; chairs
will be provided. Registration required.
Thursday July 29
VolunTeen Pizza Party: the Fear Factory
12:00-2:00 p.m.
All Teens who have served as volunteers throughout the summer
are invited to attend this annual “thank you” party held
just for them. This
summer we’re scaring up some all-new gross food challenges to
test your limits, plus Eleanor Wood, young adult librarian from Decatur Public
Library, shares her expertise as a stage make-up artist, turning attendees into
zombies & other cool forms of the living dead. We’ll eat, drink
and be scary! Registration required. |
